VITAMIN D AND ITS IMPORTANCE

Vitamin D not only plays a major role in keeping our bones strong but also inhibits the development of cells which may become cancerous . It makes our immune system strong and maintains
all the vital funtions of our body and controls all the organs of our body.

According to the international scientific studies more than 90% of the population are deficient in vitamin D. This poses a very great risk of developing a list of diseases spanning all the organs of

entire human body. Vitamin D is considered as one of the important hormones our body needs and has a effect which is equivalent to that of steroids.

It is necessary to expose ourselves to the sunlight for a minimum of twenty minutes before 11 A.M in the morning of after 4 P.M in the evening as our skin has the ability to synthesize enough Vitamin D as sun is the main source of vitamin D . Those who are at a greater risk of developping vitamin D deficiency are people who are aged, infants, those who lead a sedentary lifestyle and those who work during the nights etc.

Deficiency in Vitamin D can lead to a number of diseases like

1. Thyroid disorders (both hypo and hyperthyroidism)

2.Diabetes

3. Rheumatoid arthritis

4. Prostrate Cancer

4.Autoimmune disorders

5.Colon cancer

7.Sjogren's syndrome

8.Osteoporosis

9. Heart disease

Supplementing Vitamin D with synthetic hormones which exceeds 2000UI may induce toxic effects in our body. It increases the calcium deposits in our blood by increasing the calcium deposits in our arteries, tendons and kidneys. In infants it may lead to loss of apetite, diarrhea, thirst etc.

MUDRAS OR HAND GESTURES WHICH HELPS FIGHT THYROID PROBLEMS

The human body is made up of seven chakras and it is believed that energy flows through this chakras. Blocked energies in these chakras can lead to malfunctioning of our organs thereby leading to diseases or illness. The seven main chakras of our body are Sahasrara (Pineal gland) which is also believed as the third eye, Ajna (pituitary gland), Vishudha (Thyroid gland), Anahat (Thymus gland),

Manipur (Adrenal and Pancreas), Swadhisthan (Solax plexus), Mooladhar (reproductive organs).

By balancing these chakras one can control the five elements of the body thereby regulating the functions of all the organs and brain.

Mudras which are very effective in thyroid-related problems are Gyan mudra, Ling mudra, Chakra mudra, shankh mudra, etc. Practicing these mudras everyday helps in correcting problems related to thyroid glands. Our body is made up of five elements earth, water, fire, air, and space. These mudras help in balancing these elements and thereby correcting the disorders related to thyroid problems.

I would highly recommend trying meditation with Yoga to overcome thyroid problems. Click the link below for more information
HOW TO NORMALIZE HORMONAL SECRETIONS

The irregularities in the menstrual cycle may be one of the reasons for thyroid problems in women. Hormonal imbalances due to irregular menstrual cycles may give rise to other health issues. Once the regularity is maintained all the problems related to hormonal imbalances can be kept in check. Most of women neglect these symptoms. So it is necessary to balance the proper functioning of our reproductive organs.

Causes of the irregularity of periods

1. Hormonal imbalance

2.Obesity

3.Anemia

4. Age

5. Underlying medical conditions

6. Physical activity

7. Hereditary factors

8. Presence of fibroids,PCOS, menopause etc.

9. Thyroid problems

10. Stress,anxiety,emotional disturbances etc.

11. Medications

How to Maintain Regularity

1. Drink plenty of water upto eight glasses per day. This helps in eliminating toxins accumulated in our body.

2. Relax your mind and body to get rid of stress, anxiety, emotional problems. Try to sleep for six to eight hours per day as this helps in relaxing all the organs and glands and there will be a proper secretion of hormones from the respective glands

3. Practice yoga and breathing regularly. Poses like shalabasana (Locust or Grasshopper pose),halasana (Plough pose),matsyasana (Fish pose),supta vajrasana (Kneeling pose),bhujangasana (Cobra pose) and dhanurasana (Bow pose) and supta vajrasana (Thunderbolt pose) ensures proper supply of blood as well as oxygen to our reproductive organs thereby activating them.

4. Irregularity may be due to the presence of Iron deficiency anemia. Eating iron-rich foods like spinach, beets, figs, raisins, wheat, millets etc can correct the presence deficiency in iron thereby correcting the irregularities in the monthly cycles. Iron supplements help in treating iron-deficiency anemia.

5. Evening primrose oil is also effective in treating menstrual disorders as it contains Omega 6 fatty acids.
It helps to treat premenstrual syndrome and also the discomforts associated with pre and post-menopause.

ROLE OF REFLEXOLOGY IN TREATING IRREGULARITIES

*Reflexology or Zone therapy can do wonders in correcting the imbalances and restoring the functioning of our reproductive organs.*

The reflexes of our reproductive organs like ovaries, uterus, testes, prostate glands etc are located on both side of the wrists. By massaging these areas with the help of our thumbs or with an acupressure device for few minutes daily all the organs get activated. By activating these points all our reproductive organs get stimulated and the hormonal secretions by these glands will be restored. Massage these reflexes daily for one to two minutes and get rid of all the toxins accumulated in these regions thereby restoring their function as well as balance.

By practicing acupressure or reflexology regularly one can overcome the problems related to late or early periods, amenorrhea, leucorrhoea, dysmenorrhea and even symptoms associated with menopause like hot flashes, insomnia, depression, fatigue, osteoporosis, etc.

Hypothyroidism is the underactivity of thyroid gland where there is a decrease in the production of thyroid hormones. This condition is more common in women than in men. Hypothyroidism is also a auto immune disorder commonly known as Hashimoto's thyroiditis.Deficiency of Iodine can lead to hypothyroidism.

Surgery partial or total thyroidectomy and Radio active Iodine treatment can lead to permanent hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism may be triggered due to other factors like pregnancy, emotional disturbances, stress, anxiety, unhealthy lifestyle, loss, grief etc.

The most common symptoms associated with hypothyroidism are weight gain, depression, fatigue, insomnia, brain fog, hair loss, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis etc.Usually hypothyrodism is treated with Levythroxine or Synthroid hormones which can help in restoring the hormonal balance. But the severity of the disease and its symptoms doesn't subside with just these hormone replacement treatment. The thyroid glands function can be restored to normal or somewhere near normal through alternative therapies and remedies. But for patients who have lost their glands due to surgery may have to suffer with this condition throughout their lifetime but the associated symptoms with this disease can be kept in a check by following natural treatment protocols.

SYMPTOMS OF HYPOTHYROIDISM

1. Fatigue

2.Weight gain

3. Insomnia

4. Slow reflexes

6. Low body temperature

7. Depression

8. Brain fog

9. Dry skin

10. Irregular menstrual cycles

11. Body temperature less than 97.8 degrees

TREATING HYPOTHYROIDISM NATURALLY

1. Drink plenty of water upto eight glasses as this will help in flushing the toxins accumulated in our body.

2. Switch to foods which contain lots of fibre as they provide roughage thereby eliminating constipation. Consume lots of fresh fruits as well as vegetables.Avoid MSG,breads, pizzas, carbonated drinks, sweets and alcoholic beverages.Avoid artificial sweeteners like aspartames, etc and make use of Rock salt.

3. Selenium plays a very important role in treating thyroid conditions.Brazil nuts are rich in selenium and eating two brazilnuts a day can treat selenium deficiency.

Accupressure was a technique followed by Indians 5000 years back to treat different kinds of ailments and diseases. Today it is known as accupuncture practised by the chinese. The reflexes of the all glands as well as the organs are situated on our hands as well as soles. So when pressure is applied using our thumbs or when these points are massaged using our thumbs or any other accupressure instrument blockages to the organs or glands will be cleared thereby activating them.

The thyroid glands reflexes or accupressure points are situated below the base of the thumb as well as toes. By massaging these reflexes or applying pressure to these points one to two minutes daily the thyroid glands will be stimulated and activated. There will be an increase in the blood flow to this region as well as oxygen. This helps in restoring the proper functioning of the thyroid glands.

Yoga has a hundred percent cure for man's ailments both physical as well as psychological. Yoga provides internal massage to all the organs of our body thereby eliminating the toxins accumulated in them. As there is a proper supply of blood and oxygen to all the organs there is proper secretion of hormones as well as juices from the important glands. Through breathing exercises, the intake of oxygen through the lungs increases thereby the supply of oxygen to all the organs as well the glands increases.

Thyroid glands can be energized by practicing certain yoga poses and breathing techniques. If the supply of oxygen, as well as the blood to the thyroid region, is increased the glands start functioning properly, all the toxins will be eliminated and finally one can stop the dependency on thyroid medications.

CAMEL POSE

Yoga should be practiced on an empty stomach early in the morning or late in the evenings two and a half to three hours after taking meals. One should not force himself or herself into any postures as it might hurt them. Slowly and steadily one can attain perfection as the elasticity and flexibility of the muscles improve.
The poses which can really improve the functioning of thyroid glands are chakrasana(Wheel Pose),Halasana(shoulder stand), Matsyasana(Fish pose), and Ushtrasana(Camel Pose).

SHOULDER STAND

Breathing techniques like Pranayam(anulom, vilom),kapalbhati and particularly ujjayi pranayama can help in restoring the functioning of thyroid glands. Practicing regular yogic breathing with exercises can really help in solving your thyroid problems by stimulating the glands and helping it in secreting the necessary T3,T4 and TSH hormones. If a person is not comfortable practicing the above-listed asanas he or she can start with neck exercises. Slowly rotate your neck in the clockwise and anti-clockwise direction, bend it forward, backward and sidewards with a slow-moving motion. This also increases the oxygen supply as well as blood flow to the neck region thereby activating the thyroid glands. With regular practise, one can put an end to hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism permanently.
The thyroid gland is the butterfly shaped gland located in the neck region. It's one of the important glands in our endocrine system. The Thyroid gland is responsible for the production of thyroxine hormones T3,T4 . It controls the body temperature and hence acts as a barometer. It controls our heart , lungs, and also helps in metabolism It also regulates calcium levels in our body and plays a important role in energy production. Malfunctioning of these glands can lead to thyroid problems such as hyperthyroidism, hypothyoridism, thyroiditis, and even goiters.

Hyperthyroidism or overactive thyroid is a condition where the thyroid glands produces excess of T3 and T4
which is the opposite of underactive thyroid or hypothyroidism where there is a reduced production of T3 and T4 hormones respectively. The most common cause of hyperthyroidism is Grave's disease.

Hyperthyroidism can also lead to thyrotoxicosis. Thyrotoxicosis can be caused due to inflammation of thyroid gland which produces excess of thyroid hormones.

TSH is the thyroid stimulating hormone which is necessary for the production of T3 and T4 hormones. The TSH is regulated by TRH which is produced in hypothalamus.

SYMPTOMS OF HYPERTHYROIDISM:

1.low energy levels

2. hair loss

3. brittle nails

16.insomnia

CAUSES OF HYPERTHYROIDISM:

Various factors which are responsible for thyroid malfunction are stress, anxiety, depression, emotional disturbances, hormonal imbalances, toxicity caused by metals, viral infections, pregnancy, hereditary factors, lack of iodine in the diet etc.

If hyperthyroidism is neglected or left untreated it may lead to thyroid storm. Thyroid storm symptoms include increase in body temperature more than 40 degrees, very rapid heart beat, diarrhea , vomitting , dehydration and may prove fatal also. Thyroid storm needs immediate medical attention and hospitalization and the person with this condition has to be treated to reduce the thyroid levels.

According to allopathy, anti-thyroid medications were prescribed to fight hyperthyroidism and its associated symptoms when I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism back in 2008. Some additional supplements were also prescribed to fight deficiencies associated with the thyroid problems like vitamin D, calcium and Iron.

Allopathic drugs are capable of suppressing the medical conditions but are not effective in getting rid of the discomforts associated with the disease. The medications prescribed by my endo were not sufficient to treat some of the symptoms like insomnia, increased heartbeat, dry skin, severe fatigue, irritability, trembling, etc. I thought of seeking advice from alternative therapists and holistic doctors to treat the discomforts associated with the disease naturally.

According to Ayurveda yoga when practiced with breathing exercises improves the functioning of the thyroid glands and also corrects the hormonal imbalances. As I read many success stories about the thyroid problems my belief in alternative therapies and remedies became strong. I practiced yoga regularly with breathing techniques. I had done some certification courses in yoga during our stay in Singapore and was familiar with all the asanas and breathing techniques. Along with antithyroid drugs, I took some Ayurvedic remedies and some homeopathic medicines. After a period of one year in 2009 my blood reports were normal and T3, T4, TSH reading was within the specified range.

According to the American Thyroid Association, 30% to 50% of the patients with Graves disease have chances of relapse following the withdrawal of anti-thyroid medications. RAI was prescribed to me by my endocrinologist when I had a relapse in 2011. It was the last option left to treat this condition and also to prevent it from reoccurring. But I thought of switching to natural remedies to get rid of this problem permanently.

Reading lots of books and articles about this disease by well-known authors and practitioners helped me in gathering some information to fight this disease alternatively and naturally. One book which provides complete information about the disease with hopes on alternative therapies and remedies to get rid of this condition is Living well with graves disease and hyperthyroidism written by Mary J. POINTS TO REMEMBER WHILE TREATING HYPERTHYROIDISM NATURALLY

 1. Practice yoga regularly with breathing techniques.

 2. Supplement deficiencies like iron, selenium, magnesium, calcium, vitamin D by taking healthy supplements or by eating a well-balanced diet.

 3. Selenium plays a very important role in treating thyroid conditions. Supplement your selenium by just eating two brazil nuts a day. Try not to consume more brazil nuts as it may induce selenium toxicity.

 4. Omega-three fatty acid supplements are very effective in reducing inflammation. Good sources of omega 3 are flax seeds, walnuts or fish oil extract of salmon.

 5. Evening primrose oil treats dry skin conditions, brittle nails and premenstrual symptoms.

 6. Iron, calcium and magnesium supplements treats vitamin deficiencies.

 7. Acupressure plays a very important role in treating hyperthyroidism. As it clears all the blockages and regulates the normal functioning of all the organs of our body.

8. Vitamin B supplements like B6, B12, and PABA reduces the fatigue associated with thyroid problems.

 9. Try not to use supplements that are available over the counters as they are synthetic in nature and can become rancid over a period of time. Try supplements sold by good health care pharmacies even if they are expensive.

10. Herbs like Bugleweed, Lemon balm, wild thyme etc helps in suppressing the hyperthyroid symptoms. All these herbal formulations can be found in tincture form but before making use of these herbs its better to consult a naturopath doctor or a holistic doctor.

11. Evening primrose oil helps in reducing inflammation. It helps in relieving stress and pain associated with PMS and even menopause symptoms. It helps in keeping hair, skin soft and supple as it contains Omega 6 fatty acids.

12. Avoid constipation by consuming foods that are rich in fiber. Fresh fruits and vegetables contain fiber and provide roughage necessary for proper assimilation and elimination. Avoid refined flours, sugary drinks, smoking, alcohol, etc. Drinking water minimum of eight glasses per day helps in eliminating the toxins accumulated in the body.

13. Detoxification helps in getting rid of bacteria, viruses, fungi, microbes, chemicals, toxic metals as an accumulation of toxins may be one of the reasons behind the malfunctioning of thyroid problems. Installing a water filter system eliminates all the chemicals present in water such as fluorides, chlorine, bromine, mercury etc which deplete the iodine levels in our body as iodine is necessary for the proper conversion of T4 to T3 hormones.

14. Reading a lot of books written on alternative therapies and treatments by good authors and practitioners enriches our knowledge and provides hope and belief to fight diseases and also to develop a positive approach towards life.

15. Stress may be one of the main contributing factors resulting in the malfunctioning of thyroid glands. Stress levels may be reduced by taking adequate rest and practicing relaxation techniques like taichi, meditation, breathing, etc.
